Error
64 – When the Network Is Not Available
Error 64 happens when
we or the system is unable to find the specific network
we were using. It usually happens when we share a large
content or file over the network shared drive. System
will come up with “System error 64
- The specified network name is no longer available”.
If we are using “xcopy” program for copying files/folders
through a network drive, we will see the same error.
Moreover, we may see the error 64 again
if people use Microsoft word or excel same time. We
will see something like "File is locked for editing"
message because someone is accessing the file before
us.
If error 64 takes place then we will
be disconnected from the network and will not able to
re-connect again. But we may try to ping the main sever
and use terminal services session in order to reconnect.
But the main cause of error 64 could
be NIC or switch settings. Any change may lead to network
issue and people always try to change NIC settings from
Auto to 100/10 duplex/half duplex. Moreover, updating
the NIC driver may cause the same issue. If the system
shows “Bad connection” error, then we may test the connection
with another cable. It may also happen due to other
service connections dislocation sessions from server.
The main issue behind this could be the thread which
is responsible for allocating and for cleaning up sessions
blocked by a device driver during the cleanup routine
in the operating system. Moreover, error 64
can be eliminated if all network devices are up and
running. System should not have more than one anti-virus.
It is best if we use a user id and password. We don’t
have to see error 64 ever again by following these simple
instructions.
